Deploying from a local source with Configuration Manager

With this method, you'll be configuring new application deployments for an existing System Center Configuration Manager installation.

This section assumes that you have a working knowledge of configuring System Center Configuration Manager settings, collections, and applications. The MS-900 exam doesn't require that you have deep knowledge of SCCM, though it does require some knowledge of concepts and terminology.

From a best practices perspective, Microsoft makes these recommendations:

  • Use the Current Branch of Configuration Manager for deploying Office 365 ProPlus.
  • Enable peer cache on your client devices, which will provide benefits during both initial deployment and updating.
  • Deploy Office using the Office Client Management Dashboard and Office 365 Installer wizard.
  • Ensure your endpoints have internet access so they can complete Office 365 ProPlus activation.
  • Ensure the Configuration Manager server can reach https://config.office.com on port 443.
  • If Enhanced Security Configuration for Internet Explorer is enabled on the Configuration Manager server, add https://.office.com and https://.officeconfig.msocdn.com to Trusted Sites.
Before configuring the application, you should identify or configure a collection with at least one device so that you can test the configuration.

To configure Office 365 for deployment, follow these steps:

  1. Create a share on the Configuration Manager where you will store the Office 365 ProPlus setup files, such as \servershareOffice365ProPlus.
  2. In the Configuration Manager console, expand Software Library | Overview and select Office 365 Client Management.
  3. Select Office 365 Installer and wait for the Office 365 Client Installation Wizard to start.
  4. On the Application Settings page, provide a name and description for the app (such as Office 365 ProPlus) and enter the target download location for the files that you created in Step 1.
  5. Click Next.

  1. On the Office Settings page, select Go to the Office Customization Tool. As we mentioned previously, ensure the Configuration Manager server can reach https://config.office.com
  2. Configure the settings for this Office 365 installation. Microsoft recommends the following options:
  • Software: Select Office 365 ProPlus. You can also include Visio and Project if you plan to deploy those applications. Users must be licensed for any applications that are deployed.
  • Update channel: Choose Semi-Annual Channel to configure the installation package for a broad group or Semi-Annual (Targeted) for deploying to a pilot group.
  • Languages: Include all the language packs you plan to deploy.
  • Upgrades: Choose to automatically remove all previous MSI versions of Office.
  • Additional properties: To silently install Office for your users, set the Display level to Off and Automatically accept the EULA to On.
  • Application settings: Define any additional Office settings. Ensure you select default Office formats.
  1. After you have selected the required options, click Submit.
  2. On the Deployment page, select Yes to deploy the application, and then click Next.
  3. On the General page, select the test collection you previously identified or created.
  4. Complete the wizard.

Using these steps, System Center Configuration Manager will configure the clients so that they automatically update from the Office CDN. You can go through an additional process to enable the Configuration Manager so that it manages the update cycle for Office 365 ProPlus applications as well.

By now, you should have a good idea about the deployment differences between Office Pro Plus and Office 2016. There are many more methods that you can use to deploy and manage Office 365 ProPlus, which is especially advantageous for organizations with workforces that have varied network configurations or have remote workers that don't often connect to corporate resources.

Now, we'll look at some of the differences in licensing between Office 2016 and Office 365 ProPlus.
