Understanding the WaaS model

In Chapter 4, Comparing Core Services in Microsoft 365, we reviewed historically how Windows deployment and servicing has been managed. To summarize, Microsoft traditionally released operating system feature updates once every 2 to 4 years. Due to the large feature and capability changes, operating system upgrades would frequently require significant amounts of testing to ensure hardware and application compatibility. This tedious update and refresh cycle could consume organizations for months or years.

WaaS, is Microsoft's modern way to keep operating systems current and secure.

In today's landscape, the traditional model of releasing feature upgrades or enhancements would not be practical. Today, there are constant cyber-attack attempts and ever-developing threats, meaning organizations must be in a position to continuously adapt new defensive strategies. From a security perspective, organizations need to be able to respond faster to emerging threats. And, from a productivity and business view, organizations need to be able to adopt new technologies more quickly to help to attain a competitive advantage.

With the release of Windows 10, WaaS allows IT administrators to receive incremental updates that will help to reduce the time to deploy throughout an organization. WaaS provides organizations a methodology to deploy operating system updates and enhancements in a streamlined fashion, efficiently keeping devices current.
