Feature and quality updates

With a new update model for Windows 10 comes new some terminology around the type of software that is delivered. First, there are two types of updates:

  • Feature updates: Feature updates are bite-sized chunks released twice a year—once in March and then again in September. Any new feature releases such as improvements in a specific built-in application, visual refresh, or user experience enhancements in the operating system are deployed as feature updates.
  • Quality updates: Quality updates denote the mandatory monthly release that contains both security and non-security maintenance fixes. These updates are cumulative, which means it contains the previous month's quality update. This cumulative nature means that no matter when you choose to deploy the WaaS model, you'll all of the quality updates to that point.

Let's get started with servicing tools in the next section.
