Divide the picture space

Creating a deliberate imbalance by using a visual division or an expanse of empty space in the frame is a simple and effective method for making strong graphic portraits. Empty space can provide weight, balance and intrigue, so a tight crop of your subject may not always be the best option. Often, this is done for the sole purpose of creating an interesting composition, though images with a clear division may also be part of a brief – for instance, magazines that require space for text to flow over may request that much of the frame is left empty. When shooting an image in this style, look for something that separates the main subject from the rest of the scene while still connecting all the elements.

ON SIDE

In this fashion shot, the white background was selected to create separation and emphasize the vibrant pink of the garment. The subject was further accessorized with a pink handbag, hair accessories and glasses; all the elements combine to produce a balanced and themed image. The green wall provides a natural division yet stays connected to the rest of the frame because of the slight overlap of the model’s arm.
