Make the environment move

If you want to convey movement in your images, why not have the environment do the moving while you and the subject remain static in relationship to each other? The result is that your subject appears sharp and stationary in the shot, while the background is blurred and active. Make sure you and your subject are on the same platform – so long as you are both travelling in the same direction and at the same speed, the subject will be sharp in the image. Consider standing on a train and shooting the subject in front of a window, on the deck of a boat, on an escalator or any other moving object that can carry both you and your subject.

DOWNSTAIRS

Here, the photographer was on the escalator a few steps down from the subject. This allowed an unusual low viewpoint that also meant the lighting on the ceiling served as an interesting backdrop. Converting the image to monochrome eliminated potential problems with colour casts from the artificial lighting.

Canon EOS-1DS, 28–70mm at 70mm, 1/200 sec at f/2.8, ISO 400.
