Use a diffuser outdoors with sunlight

While reflectors generally receive the most coverage in discussions about lighting control, it is important not to forget the key role that is played by diffusers. Available in various sizes and shapes, from round, handheld types to huge panels several metres square, diffusers are perfect for use outdoors to convert the harsh directional nature of sunlight into a far softer and more flattering light source. They are very simple to use; all you need to do is place them between the sun and your subject and the effect is obvious. You will find that diffuser material comes in different densities. These equate to how much light they allow through, with half a stop being a good starting point. If you find the light too even, you can use a reflector to bounce some light at an angle on to your subject.

DIFFUSER

A beautiful model and a white wall were all that were required to shoot this simple but striking image. It was taken in black and white for the model’s portfolio. The print was tinted at a later stage. The available light was softened using a large diffusion panel positioned between the model and the sun. This lowered the contrast and produced a beautiful quality of light. The lower level of light also enabled the model to face towards the sun without squinting. Although softer, the light still had a strong directional quality. The pose was designed to convey a feeling of stability and balance by using the arms and legs to form an angular base. All lines lead up to the model’s eyes; her strong eye contact engages the viewer.
