Create depth in even light

A softbox is without doubt one of the most useful accessories a studio photographer can have, as it delivers a soft, flattering light that is wonderful for portraits. However, the downside is that while this diffused light flatters the skin, it also robs an image of depth and its three-dimensional feel. Using a small softbox rather than the standard or larger sizes can get around this problem, as its quality of light, while still flattering, is a little more directional and can be used to reveal the contours of the face and add more depth to the portrait. Using the softbox at 45° to the side and above the subject – a set-up termed 45° lighting – is well known to give flattering light with great shape.

BEST OF FRIENDS

The smooth complexions of these two friends meant that a large softbox for very diffused light was not necessary. Instead, a small softbox was used and set up to the side of the camera and raised high so as to point at 45° down towards the subjects. The resulting light really brings out the shape and contours of the faces, with the soft contrast between the highlights and shadows revealing the subjects’ features. By posing the girl on the right at an angle, an extra element of depth is added to the overall image.

Canon EOS 10D, 28–70mm f/2.8 lens, 1/125 sec at f/11, ISO 100.
