Make use of dappled light

Dappled light refers to the play and pattern of light that passes through translucent or semi-translucent objects, creating intricate patterns of light and shadow that can make for wonderful, romantic portraits. It is most commonly seen where sunlight is filtered through a canopy of trees, passing through leaves and twigs. Fencing often creates the same effect, with light passing through wire mesh, slats or ironwork, and reflected light from rippling water can also produce a wonderful dappled light. Look to place your subject in the lighter areas of the pattern to give them added emphasis.

DAPPLED DIVA

This backdrop was chosen specifically to make use of the dappled light falling against it, which was created by strong afternoon sunlight passing through the leaves and branches of a tree. Without the dappled light pattern, this would still be a pleasing portrait, but the play of shadows adds some extra interest. Extra impact is provided by the warm afternoon light, the bold colours of the clothing and the lower than normal viewpoint.
