Know the Difference Between Needs and Wants

I know, you need that latte from Starbucks every morning or you just can't get started with your day. No you don't. You want it. What you need to do is pay the rent and put gas in your car and buy groceries.

Picture your body. When you get cold, what gets cold first? Your extremities—your hands and feet. The human body is designed that way to protect the vital organs (your heart, lungs, etc.). In your life and career, your “vital organs” are your commitments—the goals you have. Everything you do needs to focus on accomplishing them. That means you will need to choose how you prioritize your time and money. That's not to say you can never have that latte. Maybe you'll need to cut back to once a week and invest the balance in a software upgrade that will help you attract more clients. Maybe you can't go out drinking with your friends twice a week because your time would be better spent resting and preparing for a client presentation in the morning. Whatever it is, you will need to make some sacrifices to accomplish your long-term goals.
