Use These Sites to Find Work

Following are some wonderful online resources that you can use to help you find work. These will complement your offline, face-to-face initiatives for building your network.

  • Indeed (www.indeed.com). This metasearch engine for job listings is currently available in 53 countries and 26 languages. It is the most visited job site in the United States, reaching more than 100 million unique visitors each month. The site, which is searchable and offers job alerts, aggregates job listings from thousands of websites, including job boards, newspapers, associations, and company career pages. For my students, who typically seek low-level or entry-level jobs, it's the first site they visit. It's very handy and easy to use.
  • Freelancer (www.freelancer.com) and Elance (www.elance.com). These are just two of many online marketplaces for freelance talent to connect with people who are hiring. If you do freelance work, these sites are certainly worth a shot. Because we live in a global economy and so much of our work is now done virtually, your potential market is worldwide!
  • Alexa (www.alexa.com). With a degree in Sociology and another one in Broadcast Communication Arts, I am—and always will be—a student of media. Not surprisingly, Alexa is one of my favorite websites. The site, which is visited by more than 8.5 million people each month, collects data on browsing behavior (read: online cultural trends). This data then forms the basis for the site's Web traffic reporting. Alexa provides this traffic reporting—as well as global rankings and other information—for about 30 million websites. So how can Alexa help you? It provides an accurate early warning system for the future of the online world. Alexa can alert you to what's new, what people are doing, and where you need to be.
