Beware the Downside of Electronic Media

Be sure you use all the aforementioned social media platforms interactively (push an Instagram picture on Twitter, etc.). In other words, cross-pollinate. All social media platforms have a distinct culture. Be aware of each one and how best to use them. Always respect the platform!

Staying ahead of the curve should be your standard operating procedure from now on. Remember: Mobile is your friend, social media is your friend, technology is your friend. If you feel “friend” is too strong a word, substitute “tool.”

All that being said, I'm going to end things on a cautionary note. Technology is great, but nothing will ever replace face-to-face communication. You cannot replicate being in the same room, sharing ideas with others. Great communication skills—the ability to hear and lead people—are prized in the workplace. People who make the big bucks are the ones who can relate to and empower those around them. If you can do that, people will want to work with you. Your facility and proficiency with technology are a wonderful asset, but it's the relationships you build that will really make a difference.

Hang out, make friends, find work.
