Make Sure You're a Good Fit

Before you freshen up your résumé and write your cover letter, read the job description carefully. Are you really a good fit? I have my clients print out the job description and go over it word for word. It's surprising how often people overlook the obvious and see what they want to see, instead of what's actually written.

One client of mine desperately wanted to work for Google, but the job description clearly stated that they needed someone with a lot of technology experience. She, however, had virtually none. It was difficult for her to hear that Google was not likely to consider her, but she finally accepted that she would need to look elsewhere for a company that would embrace the skills she did have.
