Due to the complexity of the topics discussed, some figures in this book are very detailed and are intended only to provide a high-level view of concepts. Those figures are representational and not intended to be read in detail.

SharePoint has become one of Microsoft’s most popular products, and its popularity continues to grow. It is a strategic technology that enables collaboration among people in a way that traditional web applications could never achieve. With each new version SharePoint becomes more powerful in terms of features and ease of use. However, SharePoint is a big product, and some of its features themselves are huge. It takes time for a person to master even individual features, and may be impossible for a single person to know everything about SharePoint. The best way to learn is to read a good book like this one and to practice. The best way to master SharePoint is of course working on a live implementation (though it will take many implementations before you get a chance to work on the majority of the features of SharePoint). Considering the vastness of SharePoint it also is impossible to cover everything in a single book. This book is structured so that you get a good, detailed understanding of most of the features of SharePoint. For the few topics not covered in detail, the book provides a good starting point consisting of a high level overview of the topic and pointers to other sources. This book assumes that you don’t know anything about SharePoint. Therefore, features that existed in SharePoint 2007 are described along with features that are new in SharePoint 2010.
