Digital Photography Is Painting

Image

Pages 18–19: In stormy weather I handheld this shot in New York’s upper harbor from the open deck of a rocking boat. The weather was dramatic and the skyline of lower Manhattan made a great backdrop, with the Staten Island Ferry charging toward my vantage point. But when I looked at the image, it seemed flat without the contrasts and sense of the elements that had been present when I made the exposure. So I used Photoshop to add painterly effects—including a texture overlay as explained on pages 174183—to create my final image, which can be viewed as a cross between digital painting and photography.

65mm, 1/200 of a second at f/7.1 and ISO 400, handheld, texture overlay added in Photoshop.
