Getting to Know Your Instant Pot®

Because the Instant Pot has a variety of different functions and programs, it looks and works a little differently than other appliances you may already own. These are some of the features you’ll find on the Instant Pot, as well as some of the accessories that are essential to own.

BASE AND LID

The base and lid are the brains and bones of your Instant Pot. The base holds the inner pot and houses the controls, and the lid seals the pot. The outer surfaces need only to be wiped down with a damp cloth between uses. The interiors should be wiped down only when the pot is cool.

STEAM RELEASE HANDLE

The steam release handle (also called the steam release valve) is the switch that is toggled back and forth to seal the Instant Pot for cooking. When the handle is toggled to the closed position (Sealing), the pot will be able to build and maintain pressure. When the handle is toggled to the open position (Venting), the pot will release steam through the vent on the top of the handle. The position of the handle will depend on which cooking program has been selected.

LOCKING PIN

The locking pin mechanism is located on the lid and serves as a catch mechanism for keeping the lid safe and secure on the base. When the lid is secured over the pot, the pin will be recessed.

CONDENSATION COLLECTOR CUP

The condensation collector cup collects any excess moisture that leaks from the Instant Pot during the cooking process, helping prevent unnecessary messes. The condensation collector cup should be drained, rinsed, and washed in hot, soapy water after each use.

FLOAT VALVE

The float valve indicates if the cooking chamber has been pressurized. If the float valve is in the up position, the pot contains pressure that needs to be released before you can open the lid. If the float valve is in the down position, the pot is not pressurized. Always make sure the float valve is down before attempting to open the lid on your pot.

SEALING INDICATOR

The sealing indicator is simply a series of markings on the lid and base that help identify when the lid is closed or open. The indicator features arrows that, when properly aligned, will show the sealing positions of the lid and base.

HANDLES

The handles enable you to hold and transport the pot safely, and also serve as handy lid holders to keep the lid off the countertop to help minimize messes.

SEALING RING

The sealing ring creates the essential seal for pressure cooking. If it’s not seated properly, is dirty, or is damaged, the Instant Pot may not seal properly. It should be washed in hot, soapy water after every use.

ANTI-BLOCK SHIELD

The anti-block shield covers the interior side of the steam release handle and prevents the valve from becoming clogged. It should be removed and washed in hot, soapy water after every use.

Accessories

Here are a few important accessories to have on hand when you’re cooking with your Instant Pot.

INNER POT

The stainless steel inner pot is included with the Instant Pot and is the vessel that holds the food being cooked. It rests inside the base and can be removed for easy cleanup with hot, soapy water.

STEAM RACK

The steam rack also is included with the Instant Pot and can be used for holding items that need to be steamed, or for holding oddly shaped foods that need to be elevated out of cooking liquids.

TEMPERED GLASS LID

The tempered glass lid is an optional accessory that is not included with the Instant Pot, but it’s essential to own. The lid fits over the inner pot and can be used for several cooking programs that do not require pressure, such as slow cooking or sautéing. Tempered glass lids can be purchased online.
