Various types of weapons are an essential part of any action game. They must perfectly balance and run like clockwork, giving the player maximum pleasant experience. The story is not about dozens of variants of different guns or swords, but a couple of really good specimens because as usual, players are attached to very small arsenals, switching mostly between normal and heavier weapons in games. Habit is a second nature. A player will change something only if he is convinced that the new item is as good as the previous one, or even better, for example, if it is more powerful or operates faster.

Astronaut is Gone is designed only with two major weapons in mind: a laser gun and a gravity manipulator. According to the plot, both of them are parts of engineering equipment. Each AMU has these weapons on board. By default, they are needed for various repairing procedures outside the spaceship, but because of events in the game, the main characters should use them for other goals.

The laser gun is a basic weapon in the game. It shoots long impulses of energy, being capable of hitting a very distant object. The player has to aim by placing the astronaut in front of a target; a special color circle (sight gizmo) appears, highlighting the object. It will be shot as soon as the FIRE button is tapped. The protagonist as well as his enemies cannot hit a target placed at the line rather than in front of them (for example, an object situated below cannot be shot); of course, that is a silly restriction, but it forces the player to move the Unit much more actively, and allows him to easily escape the line of fire using strafe tactics. It also helps to organize different puzzles and mazes as far as the player can be ensnared into specific locations for more effective frontal attack.

Shooting

At the beginning of the game, the gun needs some time to reload; but later, its firing rate can be increased via upgrades. The power of the laser is constant all over the game. The laser gun is capable of destroying medium objects such as small rocks and satellites because in some situations, the player can carve his way by shooting the obstacles of moderate dimension. In an ideal case, an object that is hit explodes and turns into small fragments accelerating from an epicenter. Simple enemies can be defeated by one shot only, but armored ones required more hits. Massive obstacles cannot be demolished by the laser gun; as an option, they can change their trajectory a little bit. But it is better to avoid such features because the game level can be easily turned into a real mess by the player.

Shooting

The gravity manipulator is a very funny thing. It lets the player play with Newton's laws; so, such a feature should be used only if the game has an appropriate physics engine; the objects must interact naturally. To use this gun, the player has to tap a special switch near the FIRE button. The sight gizmo should change shape to a rectangle without a crosshair. Now, if the player taps the FIRE button, the Unit will attract the closest small object that was floating in front of the protagonist. While the button is pressed, the gravity manipulator is holding the object; in the meantime, the Unit can maneuver in space carrying it along. Once the button is released, the manipulator throws the object forward, giving it some good acceleration. Besides the fun, this weapon has other advantages: it consumes much less energy than the laser gun. An object in front of the protagonist plays the role of a shield. To force the player to use it, some special game situations can be created. For instance, a bunch of enemies digs into a narrow corridor between rocks, and there is the artificial anomaly that absorbs the laser beams; so, they can be defeated only by thrown stones. It is worth mentioning that a large amount of resources (small rocks) should be provided when the player is in such a situation, letting him make mistakes when he is throwing objects at the enemies. This can be easily done by placing a small stream of obstacles nearby that can constantly grant new rocks.

Shooting

The gravity anomalies distort the trajectories of thrown objects. This fact can become the basis for various smart puzzles. For instance, there is a powerful turret inside a cube-shaped artificial anomaly opaque for the laser gun. A strong gravity anomaly is above it. Since the turret cannot be defeated by a frontal attack, the protagonist would be destroyed by the gun's drumfire. Therefore, the player may place his character at a line below the enemy, throw an obstacle, and it will be dragged out by the anomaly's energy field. In other words, it would fly up and crash into the turret. And such interesting combinations can be invented in quantities.
