On the horizon

It may seem odd that the use of SNG has not completely superseded the use of ENG terrestrial microwave in trucks, but the bare facts are that for many locations in metropolitan areas, terrestrial microwave still has an advantage over the use of satellites. Nevertheless, the spread of SNG continues, and the future probably lies in the use of hybrid vehicles to an increasing degree.

Much has been written and spoken of over the last few years of the impact of the Internet on all aspects of our lives – and newsgathering is no exception. However, while it has become common to send prepared stories as a file in Store and Forward mode either via an Inmarsat satphone or even a convenient cybercafe, the use of full size SNG terminals will continue.

Just recently we have seen several manufacturers offer very compact terminals, which offer digitally compressed data rates from 600 kbps to 8 Mbps.

Some of these new systems offer an IP connection, which makes the uplink equipment adaptable to new ways of transmitting video and audio material.

The recent conflict in Iraq saw some innovative use of new SNG technology, and there is no doubt that we will continue to see a reduction in the size, weight and price of the equipment, matched by an increase in user-friendliness, functionality and flexibility.
