Work in New Media
We love trying out new products, surfaces and techniques. And, of course, we are always trading new tips and techniques with our friends. That is the beauty of art. The ideas are endless. YouTube videos can even spark ideas.
TECHNIQUE ONE: Be a Graffiti Artist
Here’s your chance to get a taste of the street art trend. You can buy spray paint, make stencils and climb tall buildings; or you can try these tricks in your studio. You can purchase small cans of spray paint, or try Preval, a reusable spray paint container sold at big box home supply stores.
Step 1
Tape a stencil onto a piece of canvas or panel.
Step 2
Working outside, spray paint through the stencil.
Step 3
You can overlay stencils and words to add a bit of edginess to your work.

TECHNIQUE TWO: Silkscreen onto Glass
Printmaking in glass is a very specialized art form that requires a kiln. The idea we are suggesting is to try a new medium—take a class in something that is completely new to you and become inspired anew!
You will need a background image and an image printed on glass. Put the two together, the glass piece on top of the background, and then frame.

TECHNIQUE THREE: Etch a Sketch
This is your chance to finally use that Dremel tool you got for Christmas seven years ago.
Step 1
Draw or trace an image onto Plexiglas with a marker.
Step 2
Etch into the Plexiglas with your Dremel.
Step 3
Rub burnt umber acrylic into the lines and immediately wipe off the excess. The paint will remain in the grooves and gouges.
Step 4
You can then paint over the rest of the Plexi.
