Using Page Styles

Having just worked with a number of different tabs on the Page Style dialog and configured a seemingly endless number of settings related to overall page layout, you are probably wondering if there is an easier way to set up your pages for printing. Well, the answer is yes and no.

You can actually create page styles that are based on all the settings that you configure on the various tabs of the Page Style dialog box. Then, rather than having to reconfigure these settings each time you want to print a new spreadsheet, you can use the page style that you created (which holds all the settings).

The best approach to using page styles on a number of different spreadsheets is to actually create a template and then create the page style or page styles that you may want to use with that template. Creating templates was discussed in Chapter 7 in the section “Working with Templates.”

To Create a Page Style

First, create a new template. Then open the Page Style dialog box and configure all the settings on the various tabs (as discussed in the sections above) that you wish to save in the page style that you will create. This includes headers, footers, borders, and everything else available in the Page Style dialog box.

Once the settings have been configured, it is very easy to create the actual page style. You will actually use the Stylist.

1.
Select the Format menu, then select Stylist. The Stylist will open.

2.
Click the Page Styles button on the Stylist. The available page styles will appear (see Figure 12.13).

3.
Click the New Style from Selection button on the Stylist's toolbar.

4.
The Create Style dialog box will open. Enter a name for the new style, then click OK. The new style will appear in the Stylist's Page style list.

To create other page styles for the template, repeat the steps provided.

Note

You can create page styles for the current spreadsheet if you are planning on having different printing scenarios for the same spreadsheet. For example, you may have one style that includes gridlines and a landscape orientation. Another style that you create may have a page border and background and print the spreadsheet on legal size paper.

To Apply a Page Style

Applying a page style is just a matter of selecting the page style from the Stylist. If you attached the page styles to a new template, you would start a new spreadsheet based on that template. Then you can use any of the page styles that you created for the template.

1.
Select the Format menu, then select Stylist. The Stylist will open.

2.
Click the Page Styles button on the Stylist. The available page styles will appear.

3.
Double-click on the style that you wish to apply.
