Chapter 12. The Aries Dynamic Code Translation Project

“HP customers who are using PA-RISC systems today will consider purchasing Itanium systems in the future. A number of these customers will consider running their PA-RISC application binaries under the Aries dynamic code translation on Itanium, either for the short term or for the foreseeable future.”

—Jon Davis, HP-UX 11 Product Manager

In This Chapter:

Normally, the transition to a new architecture requires a tremendous amount of effort and tolerance for systemwide disruption. Fortunately, built into the latest version of HP-UX 11i, which runs on all Itanium-based hardware, is the Aries dynamic code translation technology. This built-in facility transparently executes PA-RISC binaries.

This capability was one of the major goals in the HP–Intel alliance that jointly created the new Intel Itanium processor family architecture.[28] Long-term Hewlett-Packard customers who have enjoyed the performance and price–performance combination of PA-RISC architecture and the HP-UX operating system will not have to make an immediate jump to update all of their current applications. The Intel Itanium processor family, which will dominate the enterprise computing landscape for the next 20 years, was designed with the goal to minimize this disruption to the point that existing users won't have a major headache on their hands when it comes time to make the transition to Itanium power.
