Extensive validation testing was performed on random code sequences using both PA-RISC and Itanium architectures and comparing the results.
The results were unequivocal: Aries was a successful design for a transition aid where it is not possible or desirable (for budgetary or resource reasons) to create a native Itanium binary. Aries allowed existing PA binaries to run on Itanium processors without recompilation. It was completely transparent to the user: automatically invoked by HP-UX, and able to support applications from versions of the operating system 11.0 to 11i. No user effort was required to use Aries.
In addition, it also supported most HP-UX 10.20 applications and both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Its operation is automatic and transparent whenever a PA-RISC binary is executed. And for many system-intensive applications, it will deliver performance that is near to or equivalent to performance on comparable PA-RISC systems.
