Seeking Value – How to Deliver Better Software Sooner

Traditionally, we have managed projects with a budget, date, and scope in mind. Although Agile techniques can deliver on any of these constraints, an Agile incremental delivery system is more powerful when it is used to focus on value. Focusing on value allows a Product Owner to be highly effective in their prioritization; they can pinpoint what is the best return on investment to the organization. A value focus reduces scope creep, enabling an Agile team to deliver what the business needs sooner.

In this chapter, we'll look at how product thinking combined with an objective-driven approach will help us narrow down what is important to our customer, sooner.

To do this, we'll look at real-world examples to shift the delivery team's perspective from one of just delivering on time, within scope, or within budget, to one of seeking value. We'll also take a look at practical ways that teams can use this approach to create feedback loops so that they can measure their value-seeking success as they go.

In this chapter, we will cover topics such as:

  • Moving from project to product thinking
  • Seeking value versus budgets or dates
  • Product ownership becoming a team responsibility
  • Telling the team the why and not the what
  • Setting objectives
  • Objectives and Key Results (OKRs)
  • Hypothesis-Driven Development (HDD)
  • Data Insights Beliefs Bets (DIBBs)
