Storage threats

Threats to cloud storage are like those experienced by organizational hosted systems. The difference is that addressing these threats may require additional creativity, since you do not have direct access to the underlying storage and therefore cannot ensure its protection. Threats to cloud computing storage include:

  • Regulatory noncompliance: Either the CSP is misconfigured or is missing a component that ensures regulatory compliance
  • Unauthorized access: Data is accessed because of misconfiguration, hacking, or an intentional act on the part of the CSP
  • Data exfiltration: Data is removed due to misconfiguration, hacking, or an intentional act on the part of the CSP
  • Improper sanitization or destruction of data: When a cloud asset is retired, data is not properly sanitized and could be exposed
  • Loss of data integrity: Modification, destruction, or corruption of data
