Opening an Existing Site

An Expression Web site consists of a logical grouping of folders that contain all of the pages, images, and other files that make up the site. In most cases, the site also contains metadata that Expression Web 2 uses to recognize when files were changed, to update references to files you might have renamed or replaced, the location to which the site has been published, and an array of other data the program can use for behind-the-scenes management.

In this exercise, you will open and examine an entire site by using Expression Web 2.

Troubleshooting

On the File menu, there is a significant difference between clicking Open and clicking Open Site. Clicking Open Site opens an entire site within Expression Web 2, thereby enabling automatic hyperlink updates, publishing capabilities, and so on.

Clicking Open opens only a single file. Any changes that are made to this file do not affect any other files. In most cases, clicking Open Site will be the preferred action.

Note

Troubleshooting

USE the CH1 sample site. This sample site is located in the DocumentsMicrosoft PressExpression Web 2 SBSSample Sites folder.

  1. On the File menu, click Open Site. In the Open Site dialog box, browse to DocumentsMicrosoft PressExpression Web 2 SBSSample Sites, and then click CH1.

  2. Click Open to open the site in Expression Web 2.

The site contains one of the Small Business Web site templates that come with Expression Web 2.

With a site open, the Folder List on the left side of your workspace lists all the files and folders that make up your site. The main window is set in Folders view.

    Tip

Folders view is very convenient for examining, managing, and modifying site structure. If you rename a folder, Expression Web 2 automatically updates all of the internal links and references to it (as long as you’re using metadata to manage the site). When you’re designing a site from scratch, it is a good idea to use Folders view for designing the overall architecture and folder structure for the site.

    Tip
  3. Click one of the subfolders in the Folder List.

In the main window, Folders is highlighted at the bottom, indicating the window is in Folders View. Folders View shows the contents of the folder clicked in the Folder List.

    Tip
  4. Click the root folder, the folder at the very top of the Folder List.

All of the site’s files and subfolders reappear in your main workspace.

Note

Tip

BE SURE TO leave the CH1 site open for use in the next exercise.
