Modern smartphones can use the accelerometer to detect the orientation of our devices. Most users use their mobile in portrait position. Generally, this approach allows use of the mobile with one hand, so it is not surprising that it is the most popular.
However, some applications may take advantage of the use of the landscape position. Applications such as games, which seek greater maneuverability, allow the user to make use of both their hands in a horizontal position:
In our applications, we can take advantage of this position to introduce new ways of viewing the content of our application or different methods with which to interact with our application that take advantage of two-handed use. Applications such as Twitter show a larger keyboard in the horizontal position, with larger keys, but hardly accessible with a single hand. Other video applications use the landscape view as a secondary screen to show the video in full screen and fewer controls.
