In this chapter we have had a look at the options available to us to upgrade prior versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. As mentioned in the chapter, there are strict upgrade paths that need to be followed to get to the 5.0 version. Alternatively, many upgrades — if new hardware is available — can be conducted by following the second method shown in this chapter, which utilizes the Transporter tool. This method would allow you to carry out the upgrade in a way that would provide the most up time, as both old and new BES can run together while you are moving the users from the old BlackBerry domain to the new BlackBerry domain. It is also a safer method of upgrading because if a user fails to upgrade to the new BES, we can reinitialize that user back on the old BES.
