Step-by-step guide – publishing and modifying your work

In the tutorial, we'll go through all the steps: create a new Project on Tableau Server, publish the Data Source, the Workbook, and modify the Data Source.

Ready? Let's go:

  1. On Tableau Server, create a new project and name it World Indicators Tutorial. You can create a new project from the Content page. In the following screenshot is the CreateProject button on the new Mixed Content browsing experience is highlighted:

Alternatively, in the traditional browsing experience, highlighted here:

  1. Open Tableau Desktop and sign in on Tableau Server (from the Server menu)
  2. Open the World Indicators sample Workbook from the start page
  3. On the first Worksheet, Population, right-click on the Data Source and select Publish to Server.
  4. On the Publish Data Source configuration window, select the World Indicators Tutorial project, be sure that Update workbook to use the published data source is checked, and click on Publish (an Extract is automatically generated because the Data Source is connected to a file).
  5. When the Data Source is published, a new web page opens where you can check in that it's in the right project, as highlighted in the screenshot:

  1. In Tableau Desktop, click on the Server top menu, and click on Publish Workbook.
  2. Publish the Workbook in the World Indicators Tutorial project (be sure that the Show sheets as tabs option is checked).
  3. A new web page opens that displays the different Views:

Wait! You forget to add the GDP per Capita field in a folder! You need to modify the published Data Source:

  1. On Tableau Desktop, right-click on the published Data Source, select Create Local Copy, and chose a location in your computer (you can delete the file afterwards).
  2. To make sure that the changes have no impact on the visualization, you can replace the published Data Source with the local copy. To do that, right-click on the published Data Source, then choose Replace Data Source. A new window appears where you have to select the local copy as the replacement:

  1. Verify that Tableau uses the local copy instead of the published Data Source—the check mark (✓) next to the icon indicates which Data Source is used.
  2. Right-click on the published Data Source and select Close to remove it. It should be removed instantly (if there is an error message, it means that some Worksheets are still using this Data Source).
  3. On the World Indicators (local copy) Data Source, right-click on the GDP per Capita field, and go to Folders, then Add to Folder, and select Development:

  1. Right-click on the World Indicators (local copy) Data Source and click on Publish to Server.
  2. In the configuration window, be sure to select the World Indicators Tutorial project and change the name to World Indicators. A message should warn you that you will replace an existing Data Source:

  1. The Data Source is now updated! You don't need to republish the Workbook because it uses the published Data Source that you updated.
Keep this Project and the two published contents, as we'll use them in later sections.

You can verify in Tableau Server that, in your World Indicators Tutorial project, you can see the Workbook and Data Source. Now that you have some published Content, let's see how to interact with it!
