Future parking systems

For ideas that will be applied to parking lot systems in the future, consider some important additional features  that will be offered to make parking easier for drivers:

  • Payment modes: Both on-street and off-street space charge. This entire transaction can be made from a mobile phone. Have a system where the charge is paid in intervals of time, and if it crosses the limit it will send an SMS alert to the towing company/traffic police for ticketing or towing.
  • Parking reservation: Instead of driving to the lot and then getting directions, the customers will be able to reserve parking from their home, even before leaving. For this, the server will need an Internet connection and must be able to recognize the appropriate customer.
  • Connected lighting: With the use of sensors, parking lots are kept illuminated throughout the day. With an automated system, this will change. The places that are vacant will be dimmed to reduce energy consumption and the lights will be off when the lot is empty; the system will detect when a car is present and turn on the lights.
  • GPS-based directions: With the use of GPS systems, drivers can go and find a specific parking lot. The user will be able to get real-time directions and guidance to the space. On a mobile phone, they will see the map of the parking lots that best fits each car and can park in a specific place.
  • Better governance and traffic jam avoidance: This will apply to parking lots that can monitor people, using security systems.
  • For local government bodies: Patterns of high and low parking density could result in varying tariff rates to discourage customers from using cars on certain days, thereby reducing traffic congestion. Variable tariff rates could also encourage car pooling depending on the time of day.
