4. Read the step-by-step instructions. If the program you wrote doesn’t satisfy all of the require-
ments, use these instructions to improve it. Also look for places where my solution differs
from yours. In programming there’s always more than one way to solve a problem, and it’s
good to know about several different approaches.
5. Watch the screencast to see how I handle the key issues.
Sometimes a screencast mentions useful techniques and shortcuts that didn’t fit in the book, so you
may want to watch the screencast even if you feel completely confident in your solution.
After finishing with the Try It section, I recommend that you work through the exercises or at least
skim them and figure out how you would solve them.
You can also download all of the book’s examples, solutions to the Try Its, and solutions to the
exercises at the book’s web sites.
Finally, if you’re stuck and don’t know what to do next, e-mail me at
and I’ll try to point you in the right direction.

If you have difficulty installing or using any of the materials on the companion DVD, try the
following solutions:
Reboot if necessary
. As with many troubleshooting situations, it may make sense to reboot
your machine to reset any faults in your environment.
Turn off any anti-virus software that you may have running.
Installers sometimes mimic virus
activity and can make your computer incorrectly believe that it is being infected by a virus. (Be
sure to turn the anti-virus software back on later.)
Close all running programs.
The more programs you’re running, the less memory is available to
other programs. Installers also typically update files and programs; if you keep other programs
running, installation may not work properly.
