The t test is one of the most commonly used statistics in the social sciences, in part, because some of the simplest investigations involve the comparison of just two treatment conditions. When an investigation involves more than two conditions however, the t test is no longer appropriate, and you should generally substitute it with the F test obtained from an analysis of variance (ANOVA).
