Conclusion

This chapter, as well as Chapter 9, deals with between-subjects investigations in which scores are obtained on only one criterion variable. Yet, social scientists often conduct studies that involve multiple criterion variables. Imagine, for example, that you are an industrial/organizational psychologist who hypothesizes that some organization-development intervention will positively affect several different aspects of job satisfaction: satisfaction with the work itself; satisfaction with supervision; and satisfaction with pay. When analyzing data from a field experiment that tests this hypothesis, it would be advantageous to use a multivariate statistic that allows you to test the effect of your manipulation on all three criterion variables simultaneously. One statistic that allows this type of test is the multivariate analysis of variance. This procedure is introduced in the following chapter.
