Step 1 – RADIUS installation and configuration

  1. Navigate to System | Package Manager and click on the Available Packages tab.
  2. Scroll down to find the freeradius3 package (a free implementation of the RADIUS protocol) and click on the corresponding Install button. This will redirect you to the Package Installer tab, where you will be asked to confirm the installation by clicking on the Confirm button.
  3. A text box will appear, updating you on the status of the installation, which should take no more than a couple of minutes.
  4. Once FreeRADIUS is installed, you can begin configuration by navigating to Services | FreeRADIUS.
  5. Click on the Interfaces tab, and set up the ports for authentication, accounting, and status information.
    • The Interface IP Address can be kept at its default value of *.
    • In the Port edit box, enter the RADIUS listening port of 1812.
    • Set the Interface Type in the drop-down box to Authentication.
    • Leave the IP Version at its default value of IPv4.
    • Enter a brief Description, if desired (for example, Authentication port). Click on the Save button.
    • Repeat this process for port 1813, whose Interface Type should be set to Accounting, and port 1816, whose Interface Type should be set to Status. If there are other ports you wish to configure, you can.
  6. Click on the NAS / Clients tab, and then click on the Add button. Now client configuration can begin.
    • Set Client IP Address to the IP of the pfSense firewall. You can set this to the loopback address (127.0.0.1) for the sake of simplicity. Note that the client is the captive portal, not the end user.
    • Client IP Version can be kept at its default value of IPv4.
    • You can enter a Client Shortname (for example, Captive-portal).
    • In Client Shared Secret, you should enter a password that will authenticate the captive portal client. You will need this password when you are configuring the captive portal.
    • The remaining fields can remain unchanged, although you may want to enter a description in the Description field.
    • Click on the Save button when you are done.
  1. You need to add one or more users to the configuration, which begins by clicking on the Users tab and then clicking on the Add button.
    • Enter a username and password in the appropriate fields.
    • Password Encryption can be kept at the default value of Cleartext-Password, unless you have a need to use MD5 encryption.
    • The remaining fields can be kept at their default values. Click on the Save button when done.
    • Repeat this procedure for as many users as you need to add.
