The Unofficial LEGO Builder’s Guide was laid out in Adobe FrameMaker. The font families used are New Baskerville for body text, Futura for headings and tables, and Dogma for titles.

Images of LEGO pieces and the instructions for LEGO models included in this book were produced using the following software and methods:

Models were planned and assembled and instruction steps were documented using LeoCAD v0.73.2 as an editor. From LeoCAD these files were exported to the standard LDraw .dat format. The .dat files were then imported into LPub v2.2.0.0. LPub in turn sent each of these files to L3P v1.3 for packaging into .pov files ready for rendering. Where possible the LGEO POV-Ray Library of parts was used to generate higher quality images.

LPub was then used to launch one of two versions of POV-Ray in order to create the ray-traced images. MegaPOV v1.0 was used to generate the step-by-step instruction images for most of the models featured in the book. POVRay v3.5 was used to generate the more photo-realistic images of parts such as are featured in the Brickopedia and for many of the other construction examples throughout the book. Regardless of type, all figures were rendered at 2304 x 1728 pixels.

Raw rendered images (most of which were 11 megabytes in size or larger) were then resized and cropped as needed using Paint Shop Pro version 4.

The book was printed and bound at Malloy Incorporated in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The paper is Glatfelter Thor 60# Smooth, which is made from 50 percent recycled materials, including 30 percent postconsumer content. The book uses a RepKover binding, which allows it to lay flat when open.
