Adobe Fonts

Adobe gives you access to use hundreds of fonts through their Creative Cloud applications. These fonts are included in your Creative Cloud subscription and are available through the fonts menus of the Adobe applications or through the web at 
www.fonts.adobe.com. The Adobe Fonts website allows easy browsing through different classifications of typefaces, including serif, sans serif, handwritten, ornamental, slab serif, monoblock, script, and hand-drawn styles. Fonts can be displayed for easy comparison and selecting. Activating the fonts requires that you sign in to your Creative Cloud account in the upper right of the website. Once singed in, you can activate as many fonts as you choose simply by sliding the Activate Fonts slider at the bottom of each font display.

Activating Fonts

You can browse and activate Adobe Fonts from within the Illustrator font menu. Click on the font menu dropdown next to the font name and choose Find More at the top of the menu. The list will display of all the available Adobe fonts. Find the fonts you would like to activate and click on the cloud icon at the far right of the font. Once activated, these fonts are available for use in all your Creative Cloud applications.

Find/Replace Missing Fonts

When opening a document that uses fonts not installed on your system, an alert dialog box appears indicating which fonts are missing. If the missing fonts are included in the Adobe fonts catalog, you can click on the Activate checkbox to the right of the font. If this checkbox is not checked, the missing font will not be part of the Adobe Fonts library and will need to be installed or substituted for another. Click on the missing fonts and then click on the Find Fonts… button.

If you choose to close this dialog box and continue on to the file, the missing type will display with the closest available font or it will be highlighted in pink. You can find and replace fonts after closing this dialog box by choosing Type > Find Fonts or call this same dialog box by choosing Type > Resolve Missing Fonts…. To substitute missing fonts with a different font, select the text that uses the missing font and apply an available font.

To find a font that is used in the file, select the name of a font in the top section of the dialog box. The first occurrence of the font is highlighted on your artboard. Select a replacement font from the bottom section of the dialog box and click the Change button to change that one occurrence or Change All to change all occurrences of the selected font.

You can replace fonts from the Replace With Font From list of recently used fonts, document fonts, or system fonts to list all fonts on your computer. Document fonts are only the fonts used in that artwork file; system fonts are all the installed fonts available in Illustrator.

Packaging Fonts

When sending your Illustrator file to another person, you can collect the fonts that have been used and any linked graphics, and package the file using File > Package…. A packaged file will create a folder that contains the Illustrator document, fonts, linked graphics, and a package report.

When you choose File > Package you can select the location for the package folder and the folder name.

Copy Links copies any linked graphics (embedded graphics will not be copied) so they can be relinked to the new links folder. This way, when the file is opened by the end user, they will not have to relink the files from the links folder.

Copy Fonts Used in the Documents copies the fonts files used in the document, but may not copy the entire font family. CJK refers to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters. If any are used in the file, they will not be packaged. Fonts that are activated from Adobe Fonts are not collected in the package. When the end user opens the file the missing fonts dialog box will appear. The missing Adobe fonts can be activated by selecting the missing font from the list and clicking the Activate checkbox or the Activate Fonts… button to activate all the fonts in the list.
