Introduction

In this chapter, we will look at recipes on how to design, deploy, configure, and customize the Service Manager HTML5 based Self-Service Portal.

On November 5, 2015, Microsoft released a new HMTL5 based Self-Service Portal for System Center Service Manager. This was released via Service Manager Update Rollup 8. The link for the HTML5 portal is here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=49556

If you have Service Manager 2012 R2 with the appropriate update rollups you will need to install the portal from that link. If you have Service Manager 2016 it is included.

Microsoft moved to a faster cadence of releasing updates to the entire System Center suite a few years ago. Not only do they release fixes in the update rollups, but also new features and functionality, hence the release of this new portal via an update rollup.

Anyone that has been working with Service Manager for a while knows that the portal has left much to be desired. The old Service Manager portal was a group of Silver Light plugins that lived in SharePoint 2010. Therefore, it was exciting news to hear about the release of the new portal.

The new HTML5 Self-Service Portal has the following advantages over the previous portal:

  • A modern user interface and a new service catalog with easy-to-use navigation that is based on HTML5
  • It works in any browser and works well on mobile devices
  • Announcements have been brought back to the portal
  • The knowledge articles are now rendered in HTML, meaning they support rich text and images and don't force the user to leave the browser
  • Caching technology that improves the portal performance reducing calls sent back to the database
  • Ability to do rich customizations
  • Ability to access direct URLs for Self-Service Portal pages
  • The new portal supports the following web browsers:
    • Microsoft Edge
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11
    • Mozilla Firefox 42 and later
    • Google Chrome 46 and later

Tip

NOTE: The Self-Service Portal needs a screen resolution above 1024 X 768.
