Any network device will use the first in, first out (FIFO) queuing mechanism to forward traffic out of the circuit. So if there is too much scavenger traffic, it is possible that such low-priority traffic may consume all bandwidth and cause the business-critical traffic to suffer. This can be avoided by deploying Quality of Service (QoS) in the network. QoS changes the queuing mechanism from FIFO to priority-based queuing, preventing scavenger or low-priority traffic from consuming all bandwidth and thereby ensuring that business-critical traffic will always be prioritized.
