You can create an email subscription as follows:

aws sns subscribe 
    --topic-arn arn:aws:sns:us-east-1:<account id>:my-first-sns-topic 
    --protocol email 
    --notification-endpoint [email protected] 
    --profile admin

With email, the subscription ARN will not be confirmed until the user validates the subscription:

You will now get an email for confirmation of the specified email address:

Once you click on Confirm subscription, you will be taken to a confirmation page:
