Arranging Your New Fields

When you add a field to your report, you're actually adding two things: a label and a text box. These two elements are bound together: The label describes the text box, and the text box represents the actual field that will be used (see Figure 22.2). You can change the label without affecting the text box; for instance, you could change the label on the Coloring field to Dog Color without affecting the contents. To change a label, just click it and then retype.

Figure 22.2. The text box and its label.

By default, when you move the text box, the label follows. When you position the mouse pointer over the border of the text box, and the pointer changes to an open hand, that's your signal that the label will follow the text box when you drag it.

However, you can also move the text box and the label separately. Notice that in the upper-left corner of each, there is a selection handle (square) that's bigger than the others. When you position the mouse pointer over that handle, the cursor becomes a pointing hand. That's your signal that you can click-and-drag the object separately from the other.

Moving the label separately can come in handy when you don't want the label to appear in its default position (to the left of the text box). For instance, you may want the label to appear above the text box.
