The Gnome desktop that ships with Red Hat Linux 6 comes with a suite of preinstalled personal productivity applications. These include:
Calendar, a personal appointment organizer
GnomeCard, a contact manager
Gnotepad+, a text editor
Gnumeric, a spreadsheet program
GTimeTracker, a project management tool
In this chapter, I'll show you how to use these applications.
You might want to bear in mind that although these applications are both very powerful and free—good things, indeed!—they are not commercially produced or supported. As a consequence, although these applications are stable, not all of their components are fully functional.
Red Hat Linux 6 ships with many desktop applications. This chapter discusses the following important utilities:
The Gimp, an image manipulation tool
xPDF, an Acrobat file viewer
I also show you how to use Lynx, a text-based Web browser, and provide an overview of the Netscape Communicator Suite for Linux.
All the applications covered in this chapter are installed as part of both the Workstation and Server default installations. However, if you performed a Custom installation, they may not be present on your system. In that case, use GnoRPM to install the applications you want from the Red Hat Linux 6 VQS CD in the back of this book. (See Chapters 1 and Chapter 2 for installation instructions.)
