How to do it...

The following procedure will help you to enable and configure HA on an ESXi cluster:

  1. Connect to vCenter Server using the HTML5 client.
  2. Select the cluster from the inventory, navigate to Configure | vSphere Availability, and click EDIT...:

  1. On the Edit Cluster Settings window, enable HA by using the toggle switch, and ensure Host Monitoring is enabled. The Host Failure Response is to restart VMs. The Response for Host Isolation is Disabled by default (which means the VMs on the isolated host will be left powered-on). Once done, click OK:

  1. In the Recent Tasks pane, you should see the Configuring vSphere HA task complete successfully on the ESXi hosts in the cluster:

This completes the process of enabling vSphere HA on an ESXi cluster. Read the How it works... section for more information regarding the settings involved in configuring the Host Failure Response and the Host Isolation Response.
