Using translation features to customize Odoo for your business

Even if you do not plan to use Odoo's translation features, they can be great for changing forms to better fit a given business requirement.

Starting in Odoo 10, the base language is no longer loaded into the translation framework. Therefore, you will need to synchronize terms for the English language if you wish to make any changes to the translations it uses. Synchronizing the terms loads the terms for the specific language into Odoo.

To synchronize terms, go to Settings, and then under Translations choose Languages. In the row for the English language you will see an icon at the far-right side of the screen that will bring up a confirmation to synchronize the terms when clicked:

Once we have loaded the translation for English, we can examine the terms.

To see the translated terms for a given language, go to Settings, and then under Translations choose Application Terms / Translated Terms:

Notice that in the second-to-last column, we can see that the first page has all English translations and that the record count is 16,737. Nearly every message, menu, and label in Odoo is driven by the translations in this table. Odoo easily adapts and supports dozens of languages, but we can also use these translations to change terms to make them more business-friendly for our requirements. For instance, you could change Due Date to Date Due, or change Invoice Date to Date of Invoice. Neither will affect how the system works as they are just labels.

It is often the case that businesses have different terms for certain fields and models inside of Odoo. Use these translation features to customize an Odoo setup for a given industry.
