Moving Objects with the OST

Another important feature of the OST is the ability to move objects within the note or part display. To move an object using the OST, click on the object and hold down the left mouse button. While holding the left mouse button, move the OST wherever you’d like to move the object, and then release the mouse button. After releasing the button, the object will remain in the new location. This process is called click and drag.

Note

Click and drag, or clicking and dragging, is the process of moving the mouse while holding down the left button. This comes up a lot throughout this book and when editing within Cubase.

One of the best features of the OST is that you aren’t limited to working with one object at a time. When you click and drag anywhere within the note display over the objects you would like to move, the OST creates a box whose size you can adjust and use to select multiple objects.

To select multiple objects, place the OST somewhere in the note/part display, over the top and before the start of the objects in the measure. Click the left mouse button and drag the OST downward to the right, below the objects at the bottom. Notice how a box is created. This is the multiple object selection box (see Figure 8.4).

Figure 8.4. The multiple object selection box.

When you release the mouse button, notice that the objects within the selection box have all become shaded. This indicates that the objects have all been selected. Now you can move the entire group of parts using the same click-and-drag method you would to move one object at a time.

Selecting multiple objects with the OST may seem a little clumsy at first, but once you’ve done it enough times, it will become as easy as clicking the mouse.

Note

When selecting multiple objects, you should know that the box the OST creates does not have to completely surround an object to select it. Any object that has a section inside the box will be selected.
