Preparing to Record Vocals

There are several key ingredients to getting a good vocal recording. First is choosing the right microphone for your singer. Second, you need to interface the microphone to your computer’s sound card properly. Third, you need to make sure the singer can hear properly during recording. If a singer is not comfortable while recording a vocal part, you probably won’t get the best performance. The most important element to capture in a vocal is the performance, our focus in this chapter. If a singer has slight problems with pitch and timing, the art of digital editing in Cubase can come in very handy and is commonly used with today’s vocal performers—even with the best singers in the world.
