The Split Tool

The button with a pair of scissors on it is known in Cubase as the Split Tool button. When you click this button, you will notice that the pointer changes into a tiny pair of scissors. The Split tool is used to divide one object into two separate objects. When you use the tool to split a note, it actually creates a new start point for the new note on the right of the Split tool. This is similar to creating a new note next to an existing note. When you use the split tool to split a part, the part becomes two separate parts, which are divided by the point at which they have been split. This means that each part can now be handled as its own individual part.

Note

When splitting an audio part, you are not cutting the original audio track. You are creating a new end point for the left split side and a new start point for the right split side. The original audio file is safely stored separately on your hard drive. By resizing a part after it has been split, you can restore the audio file to its original state. This type of file handling is known as non-destructive editing.

To split a note or a part, position the Split tool pointer so that the tip is over the point where you would like to split the object. Left-click the mouse and notice that the object has been split, as indicated by a line through the original object.

If you are splitting a note into two separate notes, you can edit the pitch, velocity, length, and start and end times of each note separately. If you are splitting parts, you can treat each side as a separate part. If you do not reposition the sides, however, there will be no audible effect from splitting the part.

You can also use the Split tool to split multiple parts/notes at once in a way similar to using the OST to select multiple parts. This can come in very handy when you need to separate sections of a song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.)
