White boxing

White boxing is not a common term if you haven't been involved in the development of a game before. The history of the term actually comes from personal computers and server boxes that do not have a name brand, thus being a white box. White boxing in terms of game development is in spirit a similar concept, where a designer models an object using simple primitives, such as spheres, boxes, and cylinders to represent the volume and size of the final object. Most often, designers will iterate on white boxed designs many times as this allows a designer to create, remove, and modify quickly the geometric structures they create to suit their game's design. It is important that at the white boxing stage, designers do not get caught up in the details or even cosmetics of the objects, but rather get the level to a playable state as fast as possible.

White boxing using Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG)

To expedite white boxing, there is an important tool within the sandbox editor application, and it is called the Solid tool. As previously discussed, this tool can be regarded as a very simplistic, shape creator. To reiterate a previous point, some designers will prefer to create their floor plan and design on paper first, before moving onto actually doing it with the technology they will use. In our case, we will instead go straight into the application, and since the Solid tool is so fast to use, it's sometimes just as fast to layout your design in real time versus going through a long, planning process.
