Supporting the LTI consumers and producers

According to IMS, Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard for learning tool interoperability to allow remote tools and content to be integrated into a Learning Management System. In Moodle, it is often referred to as an external tool, which supports LTI 2.0. Moodle and can act as an LTI consumer (external content can be used in Moodle) and LTI provider (Moodle content can be used in other LTI consumers):

  • Moodle as an LTI consumer: You have the option to configure external tools, which will then appear in the External Tool Types activity inside a course (go to Plugins | Activity modules | Manage external tool types. Each tool comprises a name and a base URL, which have to be provided by the provider. Additionally, Consumer key and Shared secret are needed. Here, a number of LTI tools have been created:

  • Moodle as an LTI producer: For Moodle to operate as an LTI consumer, a plugin has to be installed, which you can find at https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=local_ltiprovider. We do not want to provide more details on this as they are explained very well as a part of the provided documentation.
