How to do it...

To configure direct PCI device connections for VMs, using VMDirectPath I/O, follow these steps:

  1. Open vSphere Web Client.
  2. Log in to your vCenter Server.
  3. On your home screen, select Hosts and Clusters.
  4. Select an ESX host from the inventory of VMware vSphere Client.
  5. In the Configure tab, click on Advanced under Networking. Make sure that DirectPath I/O shows Supported:
  1. In the Configure tab, click on PCI Devices under Hardware.
  2. Click on the pencil icon to edit. You will see a list of devices.
  3. Check the devices you want to use for DirectPath I/O.
  4. When the devices are selected, they are marked Available (pending). Reboot the system for the changes to take effect:

  1. After rebooting, the devices are marked Available. To configure a PCI device on a VM, perform these steps:
    1. From the inventory in vSphere Client, right-click on the VM and choose Edit Settings. Please note that the VM must be powered off to complete this operation.
    2. Click on the Virtual Hardware tab.
    3. Click on Add.
    4. Choose PCI Device as New device and click on Add.
    5. Click on OK.
When the device is assigned, the VM must have memory reservation for the fully configured memory size.
