How to do it…

The configuration of large pages in the operating system and the application are outside the scope of this article. See the for details on how to adjust these settings. The instructions on where to adjust large page settings for the ESXi 6.x host to align with the needs of your guest operating system and applications are as follows:

  1. From vSphere Web Client, open the Hosts and Clusters view.
  2. Select a host and go to the Configure tab.
  3. Under the System section, click on Advanced System Settings.
  4. Click on the Edit button.
  5. In the filter box, enter Mem and hit Enter.
  6. Double-click on the Mem.AllocGuestLargePage setting
  7. Click OK when complete.

Set the Mem.AllocGuestLargePage option to 1 to enable the backing of guest large pages with host large pages. This reduces TLB misses and improves performance in server workloads that use guest large pages.

The default setting is Mem.AllocGuestLargePage=1 in vSphere 5.1 and above:
