How to do it…

Perform the following steps to create a scale-out cluster:

  1. Using vSphere Web Client, log in to the vCenter Server.
  2. Select the Hosts and Clusters view on the Home screen.
  3. Right-click on Datacenter in the Inventory tree and click on New Cluster.
  4. Name this cluster scale-out in Cluster Creation Wizard.
  5. Click on the checkbox to enable vSphere DRS.
  6. Click on the checkbox to enable vSphere HA. Click on OK.
  7. Once your cluster is created, right-click on it and select Add Host.
  8. Specify the hostname or IP Address of the ESXi hosts that you will select for the scale-up cluster (thick hosts) and click Next.
  9. Enter the username and password that vSphere will use to connect to the host, then click Next.
  10. Take the default settings in the next four pages, then click on Finish.
  11. Repeat this step for adding the rest of the scale-out hosts.

Now you are ready to create a scale-up cluster that has fewer hosts with rich configurations/capacity for your server workload.

To create a scale-up cluster, repeat the previous steps except:

  1. In step 4, name the cluster scale-up.
  2. Choose the scale-up hosts in step 10 and add subsequent hosts there.
