How to do it…

In this recipe, we will be connecting vSphere to an EMC Unity. The first step is to add the storage system as a VASA provider:

  1. Open up vSphere Web Client.
  2. Log in to the vCenter Server.
  3. Click on vCenter Server, then go to the Configure tab.
  4. Under the More section, click on Storage Providers.
  5. Click on Register a new storage provider.
  6. Enter the storage details and click on OK:
  1. If successful, the storage provider will appear as a storage provider.
  2. On the storage array, create the protocol endpoint, the storage container(s). Be sure to allow your ESXi host access to the storage container.
  3. In vCenter, go to the Hosts and Clusters section, select a host, then go to the Datastores tab.
  4. Click on Create a New Datastore.
  5. Select a location and click on Next.
  6. For the type, select VVol and click on Next.
  7. The next screen should display the storage container you created on the storage array. Enter a datastore name and click on Next and then Finish:
  1. Repeat steps 9-13 on other hosts.
  2. Create a VM and select the VVol datastore as the storage location.

In the following screenshot, you can see the results of creating a VM called VM on a VVol with two 40 GB hard disks. On Unity VSA, we can see that this caused three files to be created--one configuration file and two hard disk files:
