In this recipe, we will be connecting vSphere to an EMC Unity. The first step is to add the storage system as a VASA provider:
- Open up vSphere Web Client.
- Log in to the vCenter Server.
- Click on vCenter Server, then go to the Configure tab.
- Under the More section, click on Storage Providers.
- Click on Register a new storage provider.
- Enter the storage details and click on OK:
- If successful, the storage provider will appear as a storage provider.
- On the storage array, create the protocol endpoint, the storage container(s). Be sure to allow your ESXi host access to the storage container.
- In vCenter, go to the Hosts and Clusters section, select a host, then go to the Datastores tab.
- Click on Create a New Datastore.
- Select a location and click on Next.
- For the type, select VVol and click on Next.
- The next screen should display the storage container you created on the storage array. Enter a datastore name and click on Next and then Finish:
- Repeat steps 9-13 on other hosts.
- Create a VM and select the VVol datastore as the storage location.
In the following screenshot, you can see the results of creating a VM called VM on a VVol with two 40 GB hard disks. On Unity VSA, we can see that this caused three files to be created--one configuration file and two hard disk files:
